Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Near to the east, in a part of ancient Greece,
In an ancient land called Macedonia,
 Was born a son, to be the master;
The legend, his name, was Alexander.
Near to the east, in a part of ancient Greece,
In an ancient land called Macedonia,
 Was born a son, to Philip of Macedon;
The legend, his name, was Alexander.
The Story: I first heard this song on a copied cassette and my friends and I wrote down the lyrics as best we could decipher them. It wasn't until years later when I finally bought the album and saw the lyrics that I realized I had been singing it wrong all that time. - Submitted by: Christopher Tuggy

I'm a lady lying in a bed
Sweet voices come into my head
What it is? I don't wanna know
It's telling me he's got to go.
As I lay here lying on my bed
Sweet voices come into my head
Oh what it is? I wanna know
Please, won't you tell me? It's got to go.
The Story: I cracked up when I saw the real lyrics! I thought 'Another Life' was about Paul Di'Anno (then, lead singer) being a woman, and being told that her man was cheating on her! - Submitted by: ~Wrathchild87~

Can I pray with mantis?
Can I play with madness?
The Story: First time I heard this song I heard "Can I pray with mantis" and instantly thought of praying mantises. And it still sounds like that to me whenever I hear the song... :-) - Submitted by: Mike

Can I play with matches
Can I play with madness
The Story: Being tone deaf, its so much fun having your buddies around to poke fun at your disability while your jamming on some cool tunes. From their viewpoint, I guess it can be pretty amusing. - Submitted by: Dan McMillan

Oh my God, my b***s are on fire.
In the name of God my father, I fly.
The Story: This is what a friend of mine heard around '83-'84 from one of his, believe it or not, favorite albums. And he still couldn't get the lyrics correct. - Submitted by: mark

I see the ghosts of alligators

Nowhere left to run, Merry Gator’s sun
Jason Blaine’s our holidays
Nowhere left to run, navigator’s son
Chasing rainbows all my days
The Story: Apparently, Jason Blaine is a Canadian country singer, so I had a good laugh (mis)hearing this one. - Submitted by: Blenis

Harold, be thy name.
Hallowed be thy name.
The Story: I was listening to this, when my younger sister appeared and sang the misheard lyrics with real passion, along with Bruce Dickinson. I nearly ruptured myself. - Submitted by: Grimread

I can't go on
I watched him mow the lawn.
I can't go on
 I must inform the law.
The Story: My nieces heard this while playing "Guitar Hero" and when my brother-in-law informed them that he was going to go mow the lawn, they said to him, "Just have the beast do it!!" - Submitted by: Aunt of Nadine and Val

Now alter boys are after me.
Now all the boys are after me.
The Story: I can just picture little alter boys chasing down 'Eddie', Maiden's mascot. - Submitted by: Floyd's Garage

Slept in the dust with his daughter
Her eyes red with the slaughter of anal sex
Slept in the dust with his daughter
Her eyes red with the slaughter of innocence
The Story: I'm a huge Maiden fan and thought this was the lyric for almost a decade until I was told otherwise. I mean, it makes a lot more sense... - Submitted by: goodsexchange
