I gave it 555 because it's extremely an well-written piece about a devastating disorder (it's times like these that the 'How Funny' category can seem somewhat inappropriate, but I didn't want to mark it down purely on that.) This was sensitively done, so thanks for flying the flag; it annoys the heck out of me when I hear people who know nothing about PTSD spouting off about how it's an imaginary illness that's easy to fake just to get on welfare - I've had way too many arguments with people like that in my time!
You don't need to be a war vet to have PTSD. I have it from taking care of my dying mother for 6 years and watching her pain and sorrow the entire time. She died in 2001 and even today I can't go to places I used to take her or shop for her. I can't go by her old job at the old AB or think about certain things w/o breaking-down. I watched my father die of Leukemia in 1975 too when I was a boy. PTSD is no laughing matter. It ruins lives.
I am a veteran but I saw no combat. Still, I absolutely HATED it how politicians, the media and entertainment have made war into armchair warrior TV fare during the post-Cold War past 2 decades or so. They have war so neat and painless but now we've entered a disgraceful new Vietnam and I've seen people return home in such a mess. There's been some good songs mentioning PTSD. One good example is "Die Hard the Hunter" by DEF LEPPARD. It's on their classic "Pyromania" album and it's a true account about Falkland Islands war vets with PTSD.
I'm really sorry to hear you have PTSD yourself, Rob - it sounds like you had a very hard time for a very long time. I also have PTSD - thankfully it's not as bad these days as it used to be, because now I'm not as often in situations that trigger flashbacks - but every now and then something will catch me unawares. I suppose for people who haven't had much traumatic stuff happen in their lives it must be hard to understand how something can still affect someone years after it happened, but the memories don't get any less 'real' as time goes by.
Rob, Wendy - I'm sorry to hear that both of you have PTSD. You can get help, you can fight it even after it lays submerged in your memory for years, but you'll never be quite the same. Still, with help and understanding you can learn to deal with it enough so you can live again. Thank you, Oofle McGoofle and God bless.
