Joel: Yes, I have a male, Maine Coon (not purebred though) cat who is about 10 years old. He weighs about 15 pounds, which feels more like 50 when he decides to sleep on my head.

We always had cats when I was a child, they all could hear the sound from the can opener from half a mile away (except for when they were in heat, go figure).
