Go away Leave me alone
 Don't bother me
I've got no time for you right now
 Don't bother me
 Don't come around
 Leave me alone
 Don't bother me
George is really saying, "I never want to see you again. I only want to be with the woman I love."

The bag across her shoulder
Made her look a little like a military man
I'd be quite hurt if someone who was chatting me up said I look like a military man.

Hold your head up you silly girl
 Look what you've done
When you find yourself in the thick of it
Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you
 Silly girl
Take a good look around you
Take a good look you're bound to see
That you and me were meant to be for each other
 Silly girl
Well, they'd be pretty insulting if it was a love song the way it appears to be.. but hey, Martha was Paul's dog. Maybe it's not so bad. Dogs can be pretty thick sometimes.

Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer came down upon her head,
Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer made sure that she was dead
Because it's a very mean song; the fact that Maxwell sneaks up from behind people and bashes them in the head killing them!

Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer came down upon his head,
Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer made sure that he was dead.
Because it's a very mean song, the fact that Maxwell sneaks up from behind people and bashes them in the head killing them! It's especially serious that in the third verse it happens to be a man who's a judge, rather than a woman named Joan who's into science or a school teacher!

And when I awoke I was alone,
 this bird had flown
 So, I lit a fire,
 Isn't it good,
 Norwegian wood
Seems like they're basically saying "Hooray for arson"!

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl,
Than to be with another man.
These lines obviously suggest violence against women. (See also "Baby Let's Play House", by Elvis Presley.) Which is precisely why Ottawa radio station CFRA banned this song from the airwaves in 1992. Furthermore, this stanza indicates how John didn't want Cynthia to be somebody else's gal, and he was right until 1968, when he finally divorced her.

Geez, I didn't know John Lennon was that aggressively protective of his girlfriend!

Let's all get up and dance to a song
That was a hit before your mother was born
Though she was born a long, long time ago
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
 Your mother should know (...know)
They're basically saying "Yo momma so old, that...", you know, one of them "yer mama" jokes, which are just not funny.
