Story about this misheard lyric by: David Dana-Bashian

Because the mondegreen includes the name Gladys, the notion that Gladys Knight was promoting her name, from within the lyrics, seems at least a little plausible.

Song Parody Fragments:

"Midnight Train To Georgia"
Better Lyrics:
Rump pressured Raffensburg in Georgia

(But Brad wouldn't play his game in Georgia)

He wouldn't drown in Rump's world

He kept his ethics in line
Original Lyrics:
On that midnight train to Georgia

(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia)

I'd rather live in his world

Than live without him in mine

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:

"Midnight Train to Georgia"
The Lyrics:
He kept dreamin'
That someday he'd be a star.
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true.
So he pawned all his hopes
and he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket
To the life he once knew
Why:
The song's upbeat enough musically, and is romantic in a sense. But while it's sweet that the woman wants to follow the man back to his humble former life (as the chorus implies), the fact that this guys hopes and dreams were shattered is depressing indeed.

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
The Lyrics:
Say believe half of what you see
Oh, ho, and none of what you hear
Baby, but I just can't help bein' confused
If it's true please baby, won't ya tell me dear
Oh-h-h, do you plan to let me go
For the other girl you loved before
Don't ya know that I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine
Why:
Although many people immediately assume that Marvin Gaye's 1968 #1 version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" is the original version, with Creedence Clearwater Revival charting a year later with a remake, people would be wrong. The original version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" was from Gladys Knight & the Pips while still recording for Motown records in 1967. Gladys Knight & the Pips version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" went to #2 in the charts (getting stuck behind the Monkees' "Daydream Believer") in December 1967 and had a very uptempo jazzy feel to it. With when the group was performing it, live, the Pips and Gladys Knight making a lot of fine dance moves. It's definitely a dance tune, but the lyrics are just as depressing on afterthought as is Marvin Gaye and Creedence Clearwater Revival's more subdued versions, with it's emphasis of hearing through the grapevine that Gladys' lover has been untrue and her confronting him.
